Hi,

Just got an SB-900 to go with my D300s, I was wondering if its possible to use repeating flash mode, stroboscopic, when the flash is in remote mode triggered using the cameras onboard flash, CLS, or do I need an SU-800 or another SB-900 to perform this action?
I also have an SB-600 but this doesn't have repeating flashmode so I guess even if I make the SB-900 the master and the SB-600 a remotre slave this still is not possible.

Help please :)

Many thanks

You can't get CLS with repeating flash mode - it's effectively manual I think.

It would probably be kind of tricky using the popup flash as a trigger because the SB-900 would have to be in SU-4 mode as a "Remote" to see the on-camera flash as a trigger, and you only get "Auto" and manual power settings when in SU-4 mode.

But there's several ways you could get around it (not with CLS though).

1) Put an SB-900 on-camera in Repeat mode and use other flashes in optical slave mode (mileage may vary).

2) Put an SB-900 on a TTL cable from your hotshoe and have it in whatever position within the limits of the cable.

3) Use RF-602 radio trigger set.

I've tried all three methods, as it was something I wanted to try, and all three work to varying degrees.

What I ended up testing was the RF-602 trigger on the D300s hot-shoe, the RF-602 receiver on an SB-900 in repeat mode, then two more SB-900s and two YN460-ii flashes all setup as optical slaves (SU-4 mode on the other two SB-900s).

The SB-900s worked fine as optical slaves up to about 50Hz, but the YN460-ii flashes were intermittent much beyond 10hz.

How about setting SB 900 to MASTER mode and in the menu setting repeat to on?

I know it was possible to have SB800 as a RPT master and it seemed like an option on the sb900 i got today (but cant be bothered to try repeat master out yet!)

Interesting, hadn't looked at that before.

I'm assuming it sets all flashes to use the same power setting you've set on the main/commander flash as all the slaves would be in their standard CLS slave mode?

Is the SB-600 capable of keeping up?

Guess it depends what power the 600 is set at. Tried it for 24x1/128th power flashes at 10 hz and it works fine. Don't suspect the SB600 is lacking that much power in honesty.

Where or what is option 2?
I can't find it in any of the menus on my 900 - and I can't find the instruction book either! I need to find my instruction manual, I even had trouble finding out how to get the menu up again to change the flash coverage setting.....must be getting old.:help:

Anyone any idea where I put that book of instructions?:bang:

Set your 900 as master press OK for a few seconds till the menu comes up and turn RPT on.
Thats what I did and it worked

Bumping an old post, but with an update. After reading that it'd work with CLS I thought I'd give it a go. I didn't doubt that it would work, it just hadn't occured to me to try it until then.

Anyway, somebody on another forum last night seemed to suggest that the SB-600 doesn't work as a repeat flash no way no how. So, I had to prove my case. Thought some of you might be interested in seeing my little demonstration here.
