Hi All,

I am looking at getting a SB50 as a second off camera flash to use in conjunction with a SB600.

Any hints, tips or should I stay away?

Depends on what you want to use it for. It doesn't have variable manual power like such as a SB-26, and that's the sort of omission that would usually put me off.

I'm sure others will have some insight. But for now here's a couple of sites what give into about what different models offer, and a closer look at the SB-50:

Thanks for the reply, I want to use it as a second light for portraits etc.

Sb600 umbrella, second flash softbox.

I looked at the Mir site and on reading it shows that the SB50 has manual options or am I reading this completely wrong?

The SB-50 will only fire at full power when in manual mode. But if you use it as an optical slave, it'll fire relative to the master. Hmmm...I'm not explaining this very well!
Suffice to say you can't use it in manual mode the same way you could a 24, 28, 80, etc.
Hopefully someone else will chime in with the info you need.

I had one, waste of time. It can only be fired at full power in manual mode (off camera). If on camera in manual mode it can be changed. As for using it as a second light source, i would say No if you want to use it off camera.

Doesn't it use them CR123 batteries too? A bit of a pain to find cheaply and the rechargeable ones i used in my SU-800 didn't seem to last long.

Thanks all I have written off a SB50.

I am currently weighing up a SB80DX. Seems like the best option at the price I have seen compared to everything else.
