Sb700 with d3100

Evening all

Just a quickie.

Today I was told that the sb700 would work off camera without a wireless trigger with my d3100.

True or false?

I was under the impression that it didn't work and I needed something like a pocket wizard or cheaper alternative.

I think it'll work in manual slave mode. Somebody will hopefully confirm.
 
I have a D7000 and SB700 and these work with remotely through the inbuilt Nikon CLS system, should imagine that a relatively new camera like yours does the same.

It uses the pop up flash to trigger the flash gun just need to set it up in your in camera menu.
 
IIRC, the D3100 was the first of the Nikon "four digit" entry level DSLRs to have commander mode built in so I would guess that it will work with the SB700. I can't see that particular speedlight mentioned in the Nikon blurb but they do mention the SB600, SB800 and SB900 so maybe the flash came after the body?

You just need to go into the camera manu and set the internal flash as commander and set the SB700 as a slave. Provided the SB700 can "see" the on-board flash then it should work fine. :clap:

Nikon's CLS system is damn near perfect :thumbs:
 
I'm pretty sure the D3100 does not have commander mode. There was something in the D5100 specs that made it look like it did but it was inaccurate/misleading. If the D5100 doesn't have it, the D3100 won't either.

As there seemed to be too much mis-information in this thread, I've just downloaded the D3100 manual and can confirm that it does not have commander mode.

Just to confirm I have a d3100, it does not have commander mode for CLS.

This starts with the models D7000 upwards.

Works fine in SU-4 mode. Just be aware to manually adjust the output of the onboard flash as well. The lowest it goes on the D3100 is 1/16th I think.

Thanks all for your replies. Certainly seems to be some confusion as I suspected. So just to confirm:

Yes the flash will fire off camera but not TTL?
Manual settings only on flash? ( and Dial in a negative flash compensation on camera for on-board flash)
But still no need for radio triggers?

Oops, having just re-read the D3100 spec on Nikon's web site I see I misinterpreted the description of its CLS capability ... it does NOT have native commander mode.

Apologies for any confusion I caused :bang:

And get a SG-2 (or similar) diffuser.... this will kill some of the power from the pop-up flash so it doesn't contribute to overall exposure. If a flash is in SU-4 mode it will pick up the flash from the camera but is limited depending on the strength of the ambient. Indoors it's fine to work this way.
