Is it possible to use the sb800 wirelessly without using the camera flash? I'm shooting with a d7100. Thanks.
 
No as far as I aware, unless you use a trigger like the rf603n which don't have ttl and if you want ttl you would need the yn622.
 
I don't think it's possible with CLS because it's the output of the built-in flash that triggers the remote. Happy to learn otherwise though.

External triggers such as Pocket wizard would do it.
 
Next to the bi flash there is a hole/sender is this the remote sender unit or does it use the flash? Shooting at 1 8000th/sec the sb flashes but not sure if the bi flashes.
 
Hi Paul, If you want full iTTL dedication then Nikons own SU800 is designed to do what you want.

Also these units from Yongnuo, YN-622N-TX LCD Wireless i-TTL Flash Controller Trigger and 1PCS YN-622N for Nikon
Camera will do the job.

If you just want to fire the flash without any dedication then almost any of the cheap wireless triggers on Ebay will do it for you.

Hi Paul, As far as I know the SB400 does not have wireless comunication so cannot be used to trigger other units wirelessly.

It can of course be used to trigger other units optically (ie with a receiving light sensor attached to the remote flash or with a flash that has its own receiving light sensor) but there would be no flash dedication from the remote flash to the camera if using an SB400 in this way. Any flash output adjustments (which the SB800 has many) would have to be controlled on the flash itself. Or if using the SB800 manually via the Aperture settings on the camera. The SB400 should prevent the shutter speed from being set too fast to sync correctly when attached to the camera and both are switched on.

If you're worried about the built-in flash affecting the result when it's in commander mode then you need Nikon's SG-3IR. This is an IR panel that clips into the hot-shoe and covers the flash, only allowing the IR control flashes through. The actual flash output in commander mode is pretty minimal and I'd recommend trying it before worrying about it.

It doesn't anyway. Used the in-buit flash as a remote trigger for my SB800s on D7000s, D800s, and D610s. I've tested for the in-built flash influencing exposure quite extensively, and if set to commander mode, and then in the commender mode menu, set to blank ( --) it definitely will not be influencing exposure. I've tested this in a dark room, with a 10 second shutter speed and wide apertures and the SB800s switched off... nothing... jet black frames every time. Only the SB800s will be exposing the shot. I can't imagine why the D7100 would be any different.

That's good enough for me. I did notice the flash wasn't as bright but thought this was because I set the flash to -3 on camera. Flash photography here I come :)
 
If you're getting exposure issues, check that you are setting "Flash cntrl for built-in flash" to "CMD", then actually enter the menu, and set (- -) for the built in flash in the "mode" column NOT "TTL" or "M". Simply setting it to commander mode alone will not guarantee it's not affecting exposure... you actually have to disable it for exposure by setting ( - - )
