sb900 Common problem?

Sb900 - Ive used this flash pretty much every weekend for the past year or so. Went to use it saturday, and the flash only firedd every 4 or 5 shots. Almost completely random when and if it fired.

Anybody experienced similar?

Check your hotshoe- I spoke to Nikon at focus last year, they said it happened now and again.
My SB900 does the same, and also fires on its own, but only one my D700, not on the D90
 
Are you sure it's not the overheating issue that they have. Mine used to do it regularly. Until I researched the problem and found out that using non rechargeable batteries sorted it.
I've not had the problem since moving over.
Of course your problem may be nothing to do with this.

I found rechargeable batteries better in the SB900? I disabled the thermal cut out too. You still get the warning beeps but it doesn't shut down on you. I don't think the 900 really has an overheating issue as such, just a thermal protection circuit that is a bit too sensitive. I have run my speedlights until the lens starts to bubble but they are still fine ;)
