SB900 on film body...

Page E-2 of the SB-900 manual might help. Not sure what the trigger voltage on the SB-900 is or what the F4S can handle, maybe Nikon tech support could help?

The F4 can probably handle any flash ever made. Before digital and this trigger voltage 'myth' appeared, no one cared what voltage the flashes worked at and just plugged them in and used them.

Steve.

It isn't a problem using digital flashes on film camera. It is the other way round that can cause problems. The whole Nikon range allows 250V. I did a thread about it.

Basically all the camera does is short out the outer and inner pins when it wants the flash. When this happens the trigger voltage of the flash runs through part of the camera and it is this that could cause a problem. The film cameras could handle 250V+ so 6V-10V is clearly not a problem.
