Scanner choices and computer

Where is the digital and scanning section please, i want to bone up on whats what out there to put together a relatively cheap system .
I come from the Film side !

Ok things have moved on in the past years. i,m looking again at film scanners as i want to put all my pictures onto digital.
I see the Epson V500 has been discontinued so what is out there at a reasonable cost and compatibility ?.
If it doesn't operate on Linux its no good for me .

It's worth googling film scanners that operate on Linux. I just did, and it threw up some interesting suggestions.
