Scanning Negative vs Scanning Print

Hi Simon, Yes Scanning prints will always produce inferior scans, not only this more often or not the print can differ drastically compared to what is actually on the Neg, due to where it was originally printed from. The photo processing services are geared up for quick printing and not always produce the best prints. I scan professionally, gloss prints often give reflections as well. Hope this helps

I agree with karmaan but that looks like a commercial post to me. There are lots of people who scan slides/negatives commercially and the results are definitely better than scanning prints if done properly.

I've been doing a bit of both recently, scanning negs & slides my mate took years ago. My findings are, if the neg is dirty, the dust/dirt is enlarged the same amount as the image so you must make sure your neg is spotless to start with. When printing a scanned neg, you are enlarging it quite a bit.
I have been scanning 6x4 prints and printing to the same size and they've been fine. Again, watch for dust on the original.
I am using a basic flatbed scanner but there better options out there I'm sure.

the print is second generation
the neg after making sure no dust is on it is the prints daddy...
use the neg
