Scanning negs = they just look like negs

I feel really stupid and I must be missing something. But when I scan in my black and white negatives on my v500 scanner the output is an image that just looks like a negative. My question is this, how do I get it to look like what you'd get when you take it to the lab. How dumb does that sound.

You've got the document type as reflective (which is for general scanning) rather than for film. Change that, choose what sort of film, and you should be good to go.

I'm pretty sure I had it set to Film and film type set to B&W Negative Film. The preview scan looks much better. So excited!
