Following on from the thread about dpi, I have a number of old photos I would like to scan and wondered what the best number of dpi to scan at to get good original size pictures. Obviously I could just set it high but it then takes an age to scan.
 
300dpi should give you a decent scan. For quality stuff we scan at 2400dpi which does take a while but if you only want for small print repro 300 will do.
 
If you are scanning prints - gloss paper prints have a limit of 800ppi - so scanning any higher will not get any more information - it will just take longer and make huge files.

Lustre and textured prints will be lower - so I'd never scan higher than 600ppi

Scanning film you can go much higher!
