Screen protectors hard glass or film?

Thus far I've only used film screen protectors but I'm thinking about the impending arrival of my new 5DII and wondering what advantages a hard glass protector might have in reality?

Is it only the rear screen which gets hard glass whilst the top screen gets film or do both get glass?

Anyone here use glass in preference to film and, if so, why please?
 
I used film for a good while but was disappointed with its durability. In some of the hotter countries I've been to it started peeling with 2 or 3 days. It fared better here but still only a few weeks if that.

Switching to glass - specifically GGS ones off ebay, was a vast improvement. They stay on and obviously take to being cleaned much better. Also gives better protection. The one on my GF1 took a knock at some point that I know nothing of, and chipped an edge near a corner and cracked it full width down that edge. That could well have been the naked screen. I haven't replaced the glass as it's such a fine crack at the very edge and hardly noticeable.
 
I had a hard plastic Hoodman one on my D3 and the stock Nikon hard plastic one on the D200 and they were great. They took a fair few knocks that I imagine might have cracked a glass one.
The film ones seem pretty awful to me, I've tried them on a few cameras and they just peel up at the corners as soon as you start sliding the camera in and out of a bag. they'll only protect from scratches anyway, they do nothing to protect against impact.
 
I managed to smash the giottos glass one on my D700 on its first outing, I was on safari at the time and it was a real pain to get the remainder of it off the camera so I could carry on shooting
 
I've the Giottos multi coated screen protector on my body and am very pleased with it. Not sure what the diff are between this and the GGS one
 
Yet another vote for the GGS ones here!

I've had them on all my cameras without any issues at all.

I did buy the Giottos one for my D300s but it only came with the main LCD protector, not one for the top LCD (not sure if this is still the case as their website showed both!) So I returned it and fitted a GGS which comes with both in the packet.

Or are there vast benefits that comes with a stick-on jobbie, please tell.

Which one that comes with the camera? I'm enquiring about something to protect the rear and top screens from surface scratching etc.

Nikon D70+ have clip-on plastic screen protectors, which basically are wear and tear hard-plastic parts. You can quickly take them off, if you want to enjoy your display without a wall of scratches.

Canon DSLRs have plastic protection screens installed during manufacture. They don't fall off or scratch very easily - although I'm sure you can scratch them - and they're user replaceable if necessary. I don't know about Nikon, but I'd be surprised if they don't have something similar?

Dunno which Nikons you guys have been using.
The one on my D200 never fell off or got knocked off despite the camera getting my usual rough treatment. I got the camera used and from the minty condition of the screen I'd say the protector had always been on it and it wasn't overly scratched.

The D3 has attachment points for one but Nikon never made a protector for it because the screen itself is pretty much indestructable. The Hoodman one was very secure - to the point where removing it was difficult - and bore the brunt of many a knock without marking, breaking, falling off or letting any harm come to the screen underneath.
 
I have the 3rd gen GGS clip on protector for my D90, much better than the Nikon one, the edges are black so it looks like part of the body.
 
another vote for GGS used them on all my cameras and been very impressed with them. They clean well, have little effect on the viewing the screen. Have also heard that when they take a impact they should stop the screen from breaking. Get them of the bay and from asia and save a £10 or so

I spose in another way of looking at it would be - would you stick a piece of "cling-film" across the front of your lens or a piece of glass (filter) :shrug:

I've always got the 2x LCD GGS screens protectors with mine when I've got/brought them for my Nikon bodies... (If the body had 2x lcd screens then it was 2x GGS I got)

Not all cameras come with a screen protector, the ones that do usually scratch quite easily. Why look through scratched plastic at your nice sharp and bright 920K pixel screen?
I use GGS on my cameras, they fit well, look good and are probably one of the best protectors. Plastic ones are not for me but probably ok on the top lcd screen.
