SD Card Help....

I think i may already know the answer to this but.... I've taken what looked likely to be good shots today , got home inserted the card in the Lappy and nothing , card back in Camera....nothing...on inspecting the card the little grey lock has gone missing and there seems to be a small piece of the edge of the card missing as well , other than that it looks new . So is there a way of getting the Lappy or Camera to read it ???

Hi Steve

The tab you're talking about I think is the lock function, thus not allowing any more information to be written to the card.

It sounds, from your description, very much like the tab has broken away in the locked position and although you've taken shots, it hasn't written any to the card...

Was this what you were thinking ?
 
Have you tried to take another shot on the camera now your at home - does it save it / can you see it ???

The pics were on the card as i could review them , but once i had taken the card out the camera is saying no card and the lappy the same.

Have you not set the cameras functions to not allow shots to be taken with no card in the camera this also works if the carrd has write protect enabled
 
The write protection switch doesn't stop the card being written to, in fact it doesn't actually do anything to the card. Instead it is detected by the card reader, and if the reader supports write protection then it will not write (if the switch is in the lock position). If your switch has snapped off then you need to put a bit of tape over the lock and it will work fine.

The way it works is:

if the card has the cut out for the write protection switch but NO switch it cannot be written. This is normally used when SD cards are distributed with pre-loaded data/software such as movies, and are not designed to be overwritten.

If the switch is present and in the unlock position the card can be written to.

If the switch is in the lock position it cannot be written to.

If the cut out is completely absent (the card has a straight edge) it can always be written to.

100% NOT TRUE

If the card is write protected that is why it is called WRITE protected/protection.

Eh?! All that proves that your camera supports the write protection feature. Not all do, and not all card reading devices do.

EDIT: I see you've edited your post to try and clarify, but it still doesn't make any sense...

Sorry please explain

Also saying not all cameras do is like saying not all cameras do not, we can only speak from experience and all the Canons I have owned any my sons Nikons do. Also my card readers do.
 
100% not true? Can you back up that claim?

I never said that not all cameras support write protection for SD cards. It is not a requirement in the SD standard, in the same way a car is not required to have a sun roof, although a lot do.

If your card reader does not support write protection then it will be able to write to a card regardless of whether the thing is in the lock position or not. The write protection is handled by the READER not the card.

Well, SecureDigital is a de-facto standard (technically a design format), and therefore has a number of rules governing design and implementation. One of the design rules is that write protection is optional both on the card and the reader. I'm on my phone at present so not about to start looking up the design info, but here's a quote from wiki...

"On the left side there may be a write-protection notch. If this is present, the card cannot be written. If the notch is covered by a sliding write protection tab, or absent, then the card is writeable. Because the notch is detected only by the reader, the protection can be overridden if desired (and if supported by the reader). Not all devices support write protection, which is an optional feature of the SD standard."

Hi

So you could take 3-4 pictures now, then press play on the camera and review all of the pictures just taken ?

You then take the card out from the camera and when you put it in the Laptop or back in the camera is it saying no pictures or no card ??

I'm wondering if the card is corrupted :shrug:

Have you another card to try in your camera, to make sure the camera and your laptop are functioning okay ?

Success , tried the card with a bit of tap over it and managed to get everything off it...

Thanks to all for the help and intersting reading , new cards ordered..
