SD Card Help

Well have a bit of a problem, mother in-law had her el-cheapo camera away with her with what looks like an el-cheapo sd card (PNY?) anyway got home switched camera on but says the SD cannot be read put card in PC and it wants to format the card

Has she lost all her snaps? Anyway of recovery? If so any free software to do this?

Any help much appreciated.

can you not put the sd card in a usb card reader and see if you can get into the photos that way

This happened to a friends SDHC card the last time he use it. I brought it back and used the 'Recuva' program on it. I had to format the card first, then run the program and get it to scan the card in a USB reader. I managed to get over 800 photos back for him in around 30-40 minutes and it was very easy to follow. Most of the time it was running in the background on my computer anyway. I've formatted the card in my 1D MkIII and it worked again with no problems, not that I would trust it again on a critical job.
