SD Card Size and type?

Having always used CF cards in my 7D I am now getting a 6D which used SD cards.

My question is what is a safe size to get, my concern is the 32GB cards are very cheap but would I be wise to have 32gb of photos on one card. I shoot mainly JPEG

The next area is which type. I have always used SanDisk and find then reliable but there seem so many types to choose from and verying opinions and to what speed is best however it seems pointless getting the fastest if the camera just needs a std cards.

Hi

I have a number is sandisk ones bought either from Amazon direct or my memory. The sizes are 8gb and 16gb.

The biggest problem I have had with SD cards is the plastic case is flimsy and breaks easily. Usually what happens is the write protect switch falls out (I really wish they didn't have these, I see no point for them at all), but often that's just the start of the whole plastic case breaking apart.

Yesterday I tried to fix three failed cards, two cheap unbranded 16GB cards and a not-so-cheap Sandisk 32GB card. The SanDisk cards seem no better made than the cheap unbranded, if anything the SanDisk plastic broke even more easily. I was able to fix one of the two unbranded cards by gluing some thin foil around the broken switch area but the other two cards were write-offs.

So one thing I have done now on all my other cards is superglue the write-protect switch in the 'write' position - hopefully this will give them a little extra life.

I am seriously considering switching to micro-SD cards because they are much more robust and if the adaptor breaks it's no big problem, just replace the adaptor. I would keep each card in its own adaptor for general use though.

Still... I guess it's better for an SD card to break than with Compact Flash where the card never breaks but the internal pins in the camera socket do.

ps. I've always had good luck with Transcend cards - in general I choose Transcend whenever I have a choice.

If you shoot JPG then 16GB is fine. I shoot RAW+JPG in my D7000 and X100S, I have 2x 16GB, 32GB and a 64GB card. They are a Sandisk, Lexar and Kingston.

Pretty mush any branded card is fine and if your looking at the budget end transcend are decent.

I think that as the 6D only has a single slot you've probably made the right choice in the SAndisk Extreme . If you had twin slots I'd be a lot more relaxed about brands as you can get a back up as you go. With regards to size of cards it's whatever is economic- you might buy 32 or 64Gb but that's no need to wait till it's full before swapping it out

I normally use 8-16 Gb sd cards.
I recently bought 64gb Transcend and used it 3-4 times without any issues.
I used it once more last weekend during a wedding and now i can't download some of the photos. Around 60 or so. In total I have 600 or so photos.
So I am now trying to recover those files. Fingers crossed.
I always used sandisk before.
I hope i will not loose those photos now.
