Sd vs Cf card

Ok probably a dumb question but thought I would ask.I have an extreme pro sd card at present in my d300s class 10 and 95mbs.Would I get better performance from a lexar udma7 800x cf?..Basically just want to know which will clear the buffer quickest.If there isnt going to be much in it I wont bother.

err, I'm not sure your SD card is running at 95 MB/s ?
I thought they were 10ish max write and 10 max read?

Similarly, the 800x is about 60MB/s write and 120 write.

either way, the CF will be faster.
 
Just saying what it says on the card. Its an extreme pro class 10 and says 95mb/s. I am sure they write at about 40 I think.

Edit, ok, the fastest class 10 is as per my post.
but there is a new speed called 'UHS', it should have a '1' in a 'U' shape?
in which case, it's the equivalent of 633x, so still technically slower, but it probably is marginal.

i thought that CF cards wrote quicker due to basically more pins & it is seen as a ATA drive...!
But,
your SD card is a good one...

So the limiting factor is what will your camera process the quickest.
Stick either card in, format it, put it on a tripod point it at a varied / messy background, take 50 pics at max speed & time it, then repeat...also curious?

My gut feel is the CF card..
 
hmmm, a little more 'internet research tells me the D300 is only rated to write SD to 30MB/s :|
so if this is true, then you're not getting the best out of the card anyway... better have a read up on that!

Yeah but if what gavin says is correct then not getting full potential from my sd. In which case would be worth going for cf..as long as its not limited to similar speeds also.
 
I think that your camera was designed when SD card was a dirty word...
CF's until recently were the weapon of choice but as the speeds for SD have increased & its smaller & so can be part of a smaller - read lighter housing.
I suspect it wouldn't matter how fast your SD card is - it will be more litited - read that as slower - than a CF card of equal speed.
 
Cheers for the reply Pete. The d300s has dual slots for cf and sd so was going to purchase a decent cf as only own sd cards albeit decent ones but fancy running both together for either backup on important shots or as an overflow for not so crucial.
 
Stuart, I can't find anything conclusive other than the D7000 was the first to be UHS-1 compliant.
I don't know whether a firmware update will sort out the speed on the D300s?? :|

However, an interesting thought, and one which probably needs it's own thread, is that the Canon 5D3 apparently will only write as fast as the slowest card in the camera?! and it's suggested that you remove the SD card altogether if you are after maximum processing. Someone asked whether this was the same on the D300s and the question was never answered.

Thanks Gavin..certainly doesnt seem as clear cut as i was thinking it might be!..I will certainly post up my findings once I receive the cf card I have ordered and if there is any noticable difference.:cool:
