Second bodies ?

As many of you know, I have recently made the switch from Nikon to Canon.

Currently using a 40D. Having also just bought a 70-200 2.8 lens, I am looking for a cheap (ish) 2nd body so I can have a smaller lens as well as the big one ;)

When I used Nikon, I used a D80 and had a D50 as the second body. Just wondering what the Canon equivalent to the D50 would be - something decent enough to give a nice (and big enough) image, but not too expensive and full of features that I have on the 40D anyway.

Any advice please ?

I ran a 30D and a 40D for a while and kept getting confused.

The row of buttons that adjust iso, white balance, focus mode, metering etc., which are used in conjunction with the front dial or the rear wheel swap orientation. Its very easy to get confused.

I'm guessing 20D and 30D did it one way, then it switched because my 40D and 50D are identical.

Maybe a 450D would be more 'alien' and less likely to get things muddled.
 
as drew said, maybe even a 20d, can pick them up body only for £200-£300 and would be similar to the 40d just without the live view and larger screen.

I'm using a 20d as my only body at the moment, but when i upgrade to the 40 at the end of the year i'll be keeping my 20d as a 2nd bod
 
Okay - nice one.

As an even cheaper suggestion, how does the 10D compare ?

i know it's only 6mp, but then again so was the D50 and that was okay as 2nd bod. is there much diff between 10, 20 and 30D ? And how do they compare to the 450d ?

I know, I could log on to Canon's website - but summaries from you lot are much quicker ;)

if just a second body for occasional use - how about a 400D?

Ok different batteries/charger, but small, light, 10Mp good ISO range (1600) and very cheap second hand.
 
50d :P shares batteries

a 400/450 would be a good shout but not share batteries, but a 450 wouldn't share memory

This is my current set up and works well, especially shooting with a 24-70/70-200 combo.

The heavier lens on the lighter body balances out the weight of the two which, IMO, makes it easier to carry them both all day.
 
I'd go for a 20D/30D Anth....lots of commonality with your 40D. The 30D has a few more features but the two share the same 8Mp sensor.

I bought a 1DmkII used and kept my 350D body as a backup.
You might find the operational controls too different for comfort though?
I cut my DSLR teeth on a 350D so I don't have a problem...
A mate has just gone Digi and bought a used 30D body for about £320 Mint.
I like the way it handles.
 
I would suggest sticking to the X0D bodies rather than the XX0D bodies as the have the same basic layout, ie thumb wheel and top LCD, as the 40D.

FWIW 10D won't accept EF-S lenses if you have any of those.
