second body help me choose

right iam after a second body ( sick of changing lenses ) i take most of my pictures while out on long walks i dont very often sit at home and plan a photo shoot i take what i see when i see it if you know what i mean . i would like a second body to avoid changing the lens as already stated i really thought i was into bird photography( so bought the 100-400mm ) when i set out in this hobby however i find myself taking more and more landscape shots with my 10 -22 mm i have a eos 50d at the moment i am not sure i would get the full benefit of full frame:shrug: although i would like the 5d mk 2 would i be better getting another 50d or up it to the 7d :help: i have a 100-400 mm 24-105mm 10-22 mm and the statutory nifty fifty i know the 10-22 wont fit the 5d mk2
 
I've got a 7D and a 5D2 and with the 100-400 and especially the 24-105 are absolutely brilliant on the 5D2. The IQ of the 5D2 is amazing, it just looks so amazing when you get a wide shot. I'm not much into landscape but I have done a few with the 24-105 and if I can find a really cheap wide angle lens I would get it for a just in case. Despite what you read the 5D2's AF isn't as bad as its been made out to be. I've managed to get birds in flight and other wildlife with it too although I haqve to say the AF on the 7D is better.
I love taking FF photos and would say I use the 5D2 more than the 7D at the minute but, come the summer I might be swapping for the 7D for the airshows, beach and other birds with the extra reach. Whichever way you go, they both have good points and bad points but they are both very good cameras.

10-22 on a 50D + 24-105 on 5D2 + nifty fifty in the pocket.. you'll be like a beast of burden but well prepared :)

The 10-22 is a cracking lens to say the least.
 
I think I am leaning towards the 7d is it much of a upgrade to the 50d ?I am thinking the settings controls etc should be similar anyone know how the computer reacts to having two different cameras installed

As your looking for a second body, is this to complement your 50D or to "enhance" on certain areas ?

What, if anything do you find limiting with your 50D ?

What, again if anything, would you miss from the 50D ?

The way I've looked at things in the past is to ask myself simple questions...
Picking on a few of the obvious differences between the 7D & 5D...

Do you need the fast fps of the 7D for what you shoot ?
Do you need / would you like the electronic 'spirit' level the 7D has ?

Do you want the crop factor or would you prefer the full frame ?


From reading your initial post, if you are wanting a 2nd body for when you are out on long walks, I would suggest the 5D as you have the crop factor and fast fps from the 50D, the 5D wil give you the full frame and a different prospective. Does depend on what you shoot as well though

thanks for the advise guys n girls so if i went for the 5dmk2 wot would i replace the 10-22mm with for the wide shots or would my 24-105mm be ok on the 5d
 
17-40L replaces 10-22 on FF (technically, it's the 16-35L but that's 2x as expensive for not much better performance).
 
Hello again. Thanks for your input dose anyone know if the 7d or 5d. mk 2. Is due a up grade iam still un decided :( which to pick
 
Both are, but noone knows when. 5D2 before 7D - probably
 
So how much better is the 5d mk 2 with 17/40 mm and my 24 / 105 mm than My 50 d and 24/105mm and 10 /22mm which i love
 
For me its two 7D's I was going to get a 5DmkII but was told that I would be disappointed as the 7D is much newer and faster the 5DmkII is now a few years old and focus and chips have moved on a lot. This info was given to me by someone who tried the 5DmkII with a 7D .
 
I have 5D2 and 7D. I use the 5D2 exclusively unless I need the focus system of the 7D (this happens very rarely for static-ish objects). I think the pictures look better. It's subtle but...

As to 50D vs 5D2 - no idea.
 
How much better is the 7d than the 50d ? And 5d2 than the 50d please are they a massive up grade or tiny ? Please !

7d isn't a massive upgrade. The main advantage is the AF on the 7d but iq wise they are pretty much in the norm the same.

5d mk2 is a significant upgrade iq wise, but a downgrade when it comes to AF and burst rates.

Depends what you need!

AF wise, Compared to the 7D yes, but not the 50D. Thought the 5D II was the same AF system as the 50D

Not looked at the specs in detail but from experience 50d is faster and has better frame coverage.

Think the 40D and 50D have 9 cross type sensors, only the centre is cross type on the 5D2. The 5D2 does have 6 hidden AF points around the centre point, but these are (I believe) only used when in AI SERVO mode.
 
I am wondering if id be better off getting a second 50d and a save a few bob to buy other goodies

Well I had two 50D's and was going to change one to a 7D but after getting it I did not use the 50D so replaces it with a second 7d it was so much better
I found the colours much better and the low noise at high ISO was amazing.
Along with the fast FPS.
plus you have the video mode as well which you might not want but it handy to have, also with the macro lens adjustment and faster and much better focusing. Also if you do macro and have a USM macro lens you can use AI servo when at 1:2 or better, great for things that move like flower heads where you might be taken a hover fly or something. (Not many know this tip)
Check all three 50D 5DMKII and 7d here
