Second Body or Upgrade?

Hi Guys,

i'm currently thinking about getting 2nd body (or upgrading). I don't feel the need to change to full frame yet (and probably wouldn't really be able to afford it ), so it is more likely to be d300 or d90+maybe some fast lens. The reason for the upgrade is that i might start doing some concert photography soon; i also own few lenses that are not AF-S, therefore it's just to much hustle to use them with my current camera (D5000).

Please let me know which one you would rather go for and if i should still keep my d5000?

As no one has answered, I'll give it a shot, but as a Canon man I'm not 100% on the details of the Nikon system.

For concert photography you will want a Camera with good high ISO performance and a fast lens.

It may make it easier for people to help you if you say which lenses you already have, and which lens you would get it you went D90 + lens.

If you are just doing it for fun and not getting an income I would upgrade your current body and get the best body/glass you can afford rather than tying up money in a body you won't use, especially one I'm assuming you can't auto focus with.

On the other hand, if you are going to be committed to supplying images after concerts, you really should have back ups of both body and lenses.

Thanks for your reply.. I honestly thought that no one is going to reply to it... As far as non af-s lenses goes - I have 50mm 1.8 and 28mm 2.8. They both could be quite useful on d90. Especially when you're close to stage/artists. I was also thinking of getting (renting first) something like 70-200mm 2.8. The flashgun is on my buying list as well.

At the moment I still treat it as a hobby, and a good way to improve some new skills, but you never know, maybe it will bring some money in the future.

My advice would be to go and handle both a D300 (or 300s) and a D90 and see which feels "right" as there's quite a difference in size and weight between both of these and your current D5000.

If you're mainly going to be using the camera indoors at concerts and suchlike then you probably don't need the extra weatherproofing that the D300 offers, so to save some weight the (newer) D90 would probably do the job and save you a bit of cash too.

As I said though, go and try both cameras and see which handles best for you, if it's any help the 70-200 VR will balance better on the heavier D300 than the D90, but with the smaller lenses it won't make any real difference.
