I Have just sent for a second camera - a panasonic Limux tz18. I already have a Dslr a nikon and wanted a camera to take with me for them moments when I don't want to lug the nikon around. Does anybody have this camera? Do any others have a back-up camera for the back pocket or do you take your prized possession everywhere you go?
 
I have a TZ20 I keep for times when I don't want to lug all the gear about, fits in a handbag nicely
 
I have a Canon S90 for this and increasingly my iPhone. The S90 only really comes out when I think I'll be taking pictures, whereas the iPhone is with me all the time.
 
I have a few pocketable cameras, Sony HX9V, Agfa Optima 335, Kodak Retina 1a.. much easier than lugging a D/SLR around on a walk, and handy for those spontaneous grab shots that tend to happen when you're faffing around setting up a shot on a tripod, look up and catch a fleeting something behind you that you just need to shoot.

Carrying a pocketable compact pretty much every day since the end of last year has certainly lead to more spontanaity and fun in what I shoot. So much fun I won't even bother taking the DSLR on holiday later this month (ok, so I am lugging a MF camera with me and the decision not to take a DSLR is more about weight than anything else!).
 
There have been a few threads about this in the past. I think quite a lot of people like to have a pocket camera for the times when they don't want to carry a DSLR, although phone cameras seem to be taking on this role too.

I only take my DSLR when I know I'm going to use it, and have always had a compact too. My main interests are travel and history, and I can't be bothered with the bulk/weight and possible security issues associated with a DSLR, which I don't need for this type of photography. Others feel very differently, but I find a compact fine for 'supporting photography'.

We have a TZ9 which is an earlier incarnation of your TZ18. It's still a bit bulky for a 'pocket' camera and I would have preferred the Canon S95, but my wife wanted the telephoto capability, and she was paying for it! It's a decent camera, but nothing special IMHO, and I actually prefer my old Canon A640, although it's not a pocket camera either. I just seem to get better results from it, although I'll admit that I haven't spent nearly as much time with the Panasonic.
 
Until I acquired my X10 recently I would lug one or both of my DSLRs around in a TT UD30 even on social occasions. My pals know what I do so the vast majority either expect it or don't seem to mind. At times though this could prove a little short on the social front which one of the reasons I acquired the X10 which now resides in a small messenger bag. My shoulders and a few friends have noted the difference :lol:
 
I had a few of the Panasonic Lumix bridge cameras, which have all been excellent. I've just ordered a Canon 60D as a backup camera as I usually only take my dslr with me, but on occasions when I can't I use the wifes Fuji P&S. It's not too good TBH, but I get a few decent pics from it.
