Guy's i have been looking at the Canon 70-200 F4 IS prices second hand and they're shocking. Last year these were selling on here for anything from £595-£650 and now they're being listed at over £700. What the hell is going on?

There are other examples of this too. The prices seem crazy.

Welcome to post tsunami prices...

I sold my f/4 IS for over £700 several months ago, before Xmas I think. Certainly nothing new.

prices do still vary and some sellers are setting silly starting prices on ebay, cannot see prices on here as rules changed recently. If your looking to buy beware some dodgy dealers esp on ebay, ask lots of questions, I have found some ebay ads which were untrue.

Have you noticed all the old 300mm f2.8 i.s have nearly have been sold and secondhand prices are now moving up on these the new version is twice the price market forces im afraid

Regards

Richard

Market forces.
Market forces.
Market forces.

And repeat...

Sorry, but doesn't matter whether it's justified, outrageous, oversimplified or simply unfair. Supply and demand; the supply is drying up during Japan's restructuring and rescue, but the demand isn't.

Yep, it's pretty clear that's what is happening. I can not get a 35mm f2 anywhere, unless I want to pay close to £300 from dubious locations. The price previously was around £200. Have spoken to many shops and all are starting to depair the lack of 'their' orders arriving. Fo some photography shops on their low margins, still in recession, and the fact that Canon is the market leader this could spell trouble.

Guess it's not a good time to be a buyer.

Bought mine from the callsifieds for £695 posted a month ago, in mint condition and still a good saving over new, set myself a limit of 700 quid and think thats about as high as I would go.

The latest victim seems to be the 10-22mm, a good 50-100 pounds more than they used to be, only way to bring prices down is by not buying and everyone offering lower, but hard to see that happening.

I think i'll hold off till the prices get more realistic. I would rather buy new than give someone even close to £750-£800 for a £889 lens.

would it be the tsunami or would it just be there's more demand for photography?

I think the tsunami is playing a big part here. You can't buy a lot of the Canon and nikon pro bodies and lenses new in Australia now because they are out of stock. Panic buying has made the situation worse IMO, and I'm just as much a part of that. I recently picked up a D700 because its not clear how much it has set back the release of its successor. I can't wait until next year so I decided to get it while I still could.

I know nikon Australia stopped offering a lot of the rebates they had before and I probably would have paid as much for a good 2nd hand body as I would have paid a few months ago for a new one had I not managed to find one in Hong Kong.

I have heard from a friend who works for London camera exchange that new Cameras and lenses are getting hard to buy, new prices are also rising as supply slows from Japan.

As with any market force if there is demand and you simply cant buy new then there will be competition for a used item.

i guess its just the same as the car makers who are finding it hard to source the parts for the cars from japan.

but if anything - at least there is demand and work there when they're ready to resume

I've noticed that the Canon 24-70 f2.8 has gone up by a whole £100 from the same place I bought it from before Xmas. It's frustrating for me as I'm in the market for a 5d mkII and they are going up and up......

the price of the 10-22 is almost farsical. I bought mine brand new a couple years ago for £373 its in tip top condition and i could now sell it second hand for more than i paid for it new,. just silly!

Except car prices haven't changed...

Well I had my 70-200L 2.8 IS up for sale not long ago and it got very little interest at £900. Although that was on gumtree, so probably not the best place. Did get an offer of £700 though lol.

Think I paid about 400 quid for mine with a genuine hood about a year ago, they seem to be nearer or above 500 now, not sure of the new price though

Na the prices work different. with camera's etc the stuff comes pre-built from Japan.

With cars they have to be built in the uk. all they've done is lower the working week hence produce less with equivalent costs.

plus if the toyota isnt available then you get a ford. When you have a canon or nikon body your pretty much stuck to getting the one for that make.

I noticed whilst looking for a 24-70L that Wilkinsons have non in stock in any branch, thought at first they maybe waiting to stock on the mk2 but the troubles in Japan seem more the reason

Wow! I paid £350 for mine earlier this year and it's in mint condition. It does make you wonder if it's worth selling on such lenses while the price is inflated and then replace when prices go down again.

Of course, I couldn't bear to be without my 10-20mm for that long!! :D

I guess as supply runs low because of the problems Japan has at the moment, secondhand prices will go up!!! it's all about supply and demand!!
