Second hand lens prices?

Kerso is out of stock and Amazon are showing £92

TBF people can charge what they want and it's your choice to pay it or not. I work on the principle of what the market is at. If eBay etc is selling for x I'll put it up for x.

Out of interest are you after something at the moment ;)

There is nothing I desperately need but I often buy lenses that I wish to try out, if I saw a reasonably priced 28-300 VR or 24-120 F4 I would pick them up to compare them with the 2.8 zooms I have. I would also be temped by a tilt shift and maybe a good Nikon macro lens to compare with the Tamron version I have.

If I buy a lens at a reasonable price on this forum, I will sell it on this forum at a reasonable price when I am done with it.

The ebay myth is that you get a much higher price for lenses. I have used it once for selling a lens and had to pay £50 in fees, and I got, maybe, that much more than selling it here. I had a relatively smooth transaction but I was more worried than I would have been listing it on tp. I regret not just listing it cheaper here.

There are some interesting comments on this thread and, of course, people are free to list things for whatever price they wish.

What I am wondering is, I think 25-30% discount to new is reasonable for a lens out of warranty, do others agree?

yeah but kerso is just waiting for his next shippment from america - when it arrives he'll be back in stock and still cheaper than amazon

I realise that but You can't buy one this week for £75..........I've tried

You also have the problem if you buy online and not at the local camera shop, if you end up with a soft copy you have all the delays and expense of postage a few times to get one. I tend to find that most of the cameras without MA seem to accept most lenses without a problem, and the ones with MA seem to need it more often.

Lens tend to hold their prices better, than say cameras bodies.
But it's still a risk with anything from an private sale, you are cover with no g/tee,so to counter that I won't paid high prices :)

Prices go up, prices go down, its all about what people are prepared to pay and their availability. When a lens is replace by a new revision the old one becomes un available but the replacement is a lot more to buy new the 2nd hand prices for the old version actually go up.

No point saying XYZ is selling it for less and they have none in stock, I could list mine at the same price if I had none but the fact I actuall have them they will be more than XYZ who doesn't have any to sell you.

When selling anything that I have used well I try to aim for 50% of what I paid for it. If I've bought something that is of value but has barely been touched I try to show a significant saving to the buyer of around 25/30%, after all it has no value at all unsold.

However, I take a similar approach to buying, if I can get it from MPB at a similar price then I will go there first. I've seen sellers lose a sale altogether by not being flexible but I have also seen buyers expect too much for their money. I turned down 2 offers here on a 270ex flash but only because I had the same offer from a used supplier & it's worth more to be as an exchange at that price. Everything else sold so I don't think I was being too rigid.
