Camera Nikon D800. primary slot CF card and secondary SD card. I have the choice of overflow- backup or Raw primary and Jpeg secondary. My next holiday will be the first with this camera irrespective of which lens. I have a dilemma as to which would be the best " overflow- backup or Raw primary and jpeg secondary" to leave as the best setting. If that makes sense.

Well a lot depends on the size ofthe cards if you ask me, how long is the hols and do you shoot RAW ? I would stick a couple of 32GB cards in and shoot RAW and backup jpegs.
 
Card size 32 gig on both and yes do shoot in RAW normally but thinking Jpeg might be useful for quick look see on computer first. Raw + Raw would save me if I messed up on the primary card. Then again Raw + Jpeg would mean not worrying about messing up primary card as well.

Holiday is a cruise lasting 13 nights taking in Sweden-Finland-Russia-Estonia- Lithuania- Berlin Germany- and Denmark next year. So will be a combination of Landscape and buildings etc

I do have several cards CF and SD memory cards, so card size is not a problem

When I had dual slots and traveling I used the second a jpg so I could, as you say, have a quick looksee / post to Facebook easily.

If shooting a job I would use 2nd card as backup raw.
 
Holiday photos would seem like an ideal situation for raw + jpg. You get the security of jpg backups, and the simplicity of jpegs for all of the images that won't need/get any major editing. On holiday a lot of the shots will wind up in the "snapshot/memory" category and jpegs are great for that.
 
Forgot to mention the secondary SD card won't be used for video function as I have a camcorder for that.
From the replies it seems to favour RAW and Jpeg as the best option. So thanks everyone
