Generally they last fine - but its like a car, it can do 50 miles and the gearbox goes or keep going over 50,000. Generally, I wouldn't worry about it, I've never had one die one me, I've just acquired a 350D, and even though I dont like Canon, undecided whether to keep it for its age!

Seriously, I've seen a 350D and a 400D both with over 100,000 shutter actuations and still going strong.

My 7 year old Mk II is still going strong at 70k actuations. My previous camera (Mk I) failed at just over 20K (both bought second hand). They can go forever or die on the next click. You never know. Incidentally I believe on some bodies it's economical to replace the shutter unit, but I know for a fact that if the mirror box assembly needs replaced it's time to ditch it!

My 1Ds was used by a pro to shoot football (I'm not really sure why) all around the country.
I've had the shutter replaced but the current tally is 242,000 frames and it shows no signs of slowing down.
My 1D2 was used by another pro shooting motorsport and has done 117,000 frames without issue.
