Hi All,

My lovely OH has given me a netbook for christmas and I am going to fire it up today and start playing (YAY!) but I'm not sure what to do for internet security. We have Norton 360 loaded onto a laptop already and I think that can be used on up to 3 machines but I have a couple of questions -

1. Is this ok to use on a netbook or should I download a specific netbook security package - I have been googling and I see that Norton does have one of these http://uk.norton.com/internet-security/netbook-edition

2. If the original Norton 360 is ok how do I load it onto my netbook. Will there be a product key shown somewhere on the laptop that I need to use? We have a Norton disc but the netbook doesn't have an optical drive and the software has been renewed since it was loaded off of the disc.

Sorry these are pretty basic questions but I don't want to break my new toy!

Thanks,
Fi

Personally I would ditch the Norton idea. It will ultimately just bulk up the netbook and slow it down.

I put avast on my netbook with zonealarm firewall with good results.

I originally had AVG on it but that has bulked out over the years and started slowing it down hence the fresh install of avast.

Best thing though is avast is free and can be downloaded over the net.

Why don't you download Security Essentials?

It's free from Microsoft and won't take up as much resources as Norton.

Other than that, Avast is a very good anti-virus and free too.

Combine either with the Windows firewall and Bob's yer Aunty!

Not knowing that much about it I thought it would be better to go with a paid one..

So what is the best option - Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials?

I have tried loads of different products for virus & malware protection and have settled with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).
It does everything I want and does not hog resources.
Normally I try not to use Microsoft software but MSE is good.

Try Security Essentials first, if you don't like it, ditch it for Avast.

MSE is good, MS basically bought out antigen which was a very good product.

avast is also very good, i find it a little lighter on resources than MSE.

if you have a router, that combined with windows firewall should see no need to a software based firewall. its essentially a waste of resource.

Thanks for the help everyone - I will give Security Essentils and Windows Firewall a go first

If you want to ultimately go with a paid solution there is none better than Eset Nod32. It is the fastest AV around and has the highest hit rate on virus hunting.

I used to have Norton, with Eset it feels like I just upgraded my machine it is sooooo much quicker!

Thanks again for the help people - netbook is up and running (I am typing on it now!) with fully functional WSE and Firewall running
