Sekonic L358 and EV Mode

Hi,

I am playing with a light meter for the first time and using a 5D Mk11 in manual mode.

I have he instruction book but it`s basic to say the least.

I understand (or think I do) that if I use it in Ambient mode, I have to decide whether to use either Shutter priority, Aperture priority or EV Mode.

I think I have sussed the first two, in that I choose the Aperture or shutter speed I want to use and when I press the button it gives me the other value. But the way the manual reads is in EV mode it should give me both values (aperture and shutter speed). When I press the button in EV mode the shutter is always 125, the suggested aperture changes depending on the light but the photos are underexposed.

I have the EV dip switch to `On` and the same ISO on meter and camera. I am obviously missing something obvious. Or misunderstanding what the EV mode does.

On a slightly separate issue, I am hoping to practice using it at a wedding on Saturday (as a guest) when I will be shooting in bright sunshine, which mode would you use??

Thanks

EV, or exposure value is simply a combination of shutter speed and aperture.

So @ ISO 400, 1/60 at F8 is EV12, but then so is 1/30 at f11 you get the idea.

I seem to remember some cameras were calibrated in EV value, usually P&S film ones.

Can't really see the point,, may be useful in comparing light levels, 1 EV is I stop but apart from that I'm strugling to find a use for it
