Took me ages to get this right, and I'm still not happy with it. I guess I just want to have 30 years photography experience in about a week.

Cool. I can see what you were going for and think you roughly achieved it. A small step forward and a little fill light under your chin would have helped balance the image and give it more depth. All small beer as a great effort and for which I say, Well done!
