Hello, I am new to this forum and to be honest and trying to help out my mum's partner!

He has tasked me with selling a bunch of his older cameras and lenses.

Can anybody give me any tips or advice on the best place or methods of selling please?
I have tried Gumtree and had lots of time wasters, tried social media but similar conclusion (lots of people say yes then don't reply)
I was tempted to try and send them off to places to get them valued but not sure if they will take some of the older camera as they may be more collectibles rather than for real time use.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing from you PLUS I apologise of this is in the wrong place

Jord

ffordes.co.uk buy and do commission sales.

The OP has not given any indication as to what the kit consists of?

If digital then the likes of WEX, MPB and LCE might be the place to go?

However, if film the scope AFAIK is much more specialised e.g. (not being a Nikon user) Grays of Westminster used to sell one heck of a lot of secondhand 35mm film camera gear and some I surmise might still be highly collectable.

Never more so is context important @Cobra if the OP is happy to do so is it OK for him to post a list of the gear for some specific insights in regard to the direction he could turn?

Sorry about that maybe I should have put some of the make and models on here , am I ok to list a couple ?

Its Ok to list for advice.
But be advised that absolutely NO selling must take place in this thread.
We have specific rules for buying and selling.
And unfortunately you do not as yet meet the criteria.

If the camera kit is all, or predominantly one brand, there are fora out there that could be good places to advertise.

Any idea what brand the kit is?

Looking at SOLD listings on e-bay can give a fair idea of what gear is worth - at least if the gear is common enough to have multiple examples sold & the condition is similar.

nothing in that list even without pictures or full descriptions jumps out as desirable . the lenses might be slightly better as older lenses can often be adapted to mirrorless use

my suggestion would be to photograph and list the cameras on e.bay on there £1 selling fees weeks and start the bidding low i.e £4.99 per item or lower and just see what the market supports .

That's quite a long list.
However none of those models are particularly rare or valuable.
Also because of the size of the collection, it's fairly unlikely that you'll be able to sell them in a single job lot. You might manage to sell a camera with a couple of matching lenses together though.
The Canon EOS models, the Minolta Dynax and Nikon F70 are all autofocus models and are a bit newer and there are plenty floating around on Ebay, but you can always list them and see how you get on.
The older models: Canon AE-1, Minolta X-370, Nikon EM, Olympus OM models, Praktica models and Yashica will get varying interest on ebay. Some may only sell for £10 others may get upto £50 depending on what you sell them with.
The Olympus Trip 35 is the odd one out as it's not an SLR with a removable lens. These models however are quite popular because they are small and good quality. You might get between £25-50 for this.
You can search the "sold" listings on ebay to see what prices they are actually going for.

The lenses might prove to sell better and make you more money. There is a big trend at the moment for putting old vintage lenses on new mirrorless cameras.
If you have any Canon lenses which state EF (for the EOS cameras) these are still compatible with modern DSLRs.
Nikon F mount lenses can still be used on Nikon DSLRs (with varying compatibility).
Minolta a-mount lenses (for the Dynax) can also be used modern Sony DSLR/DSLT cameras and A7 mirrorless models via adaptor.
Anything else will be manual focus/aperture.

Older zoom lenses tend to be worth less than non-zooms (often called prime lenses).
Look at the lenses.
Do they say things like 50mm f1.8 or 35mm f2.8? These are prime lenses and worth listing on ebay.
Just make sure that the focus ring turns and the aperture ring (the bit with numbers like 2.8, 4, 5.6, 6.3..) clicks as it turns and you'll see the aperture open and close inside the lens. (this is what buyers want to know).
As an example, you'll probably have an Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.8 lens (likely attached to the OM10 or OM30). I sold one of these for about £25 a few months ago.

As Jeff says, wait for a week when ebay has their reduced selling fees, then photograph and list as much as you can and see what sells.
Good luck.

Thank You very much guys ! very detailed and informative !

I will take a look and see if Ebay release when they are doing reduced selling fee's !

Check ebay.

The trip 35, the OMs and the AE-1 are worth something even to my limited knowledge, and definitely worth checking. The "assortment of lenses" could well be a goldmine too if there are any low (wide) aperture primes. It's not always obvious.

wycameras were listed by Toni in post #3 and they have been very fair to me in the past.

Also, follow what @ABTog said too. If you can be bothered, putting a roll of film through the camera to prove it works (and thus being able to sell it as "working") will elevate the price too. When you're doing your ebay research, check the low prices and look to see how many are sold "untested" because the seller found the camera in a loft and doesn't know whether it works.
