Selling Sony and moving to Canon or Nikon?!

Ok iv been going back and forth with this one for ages but I think I need to sell my Sony gear and move to either Canon or Nikon. The problem I have Sony isnt regarded as industry standard and it causes me more issues because the people I work with or try to work with dont work with Sony equipment.

If I was to get rid of my A700 and A350 what models should I look to replace with?

Canon EOS 7D? Nikon D700? I know this will get a lot of mixed responses but I need to get some sound advice on how to move forward.

I think I willl have around £1200 budget to get used body then hopefully a few hundred to get some used lenses.
 
I switched from the Sony A700 to the Nikon D700. I found the Nikons ergonomics to be better, although I have yet to find a body that matches the ergonomics of the old Minolta 7D. The Nikon remote flash system (CLS) is better than Canon's that cannot use the built in flash as a trigger.

Prepare yourself for higher costs though, there are not a bunch of high quality old Minolta lenses that miraculously become VR lensers when attached to your camera. Particularly if you go full frame, the lenses you need to get the potential out of your sensor are eye wateringly expensive.

If I had been more of a bird or sports photographer or had a requirement for video I would have chosen the 7D instead. From what I see browsing the classifieds Canon's lenses are a bit better value.

In what way do the people "not work with Sony equipment?" Aren't you the person working with the equipment? I have no desire to ever do paid photography but I'm fascinated by this.

I know internet analogies are bad, but I wouldn't refuse to take my car into a garage if they were using Britool / Teng / Facom spanners rather than Snap-on (for the avoidance of doubt, snap-on are the industry standard).
 
Yeah to be honest it's your style and it's your equipment! you are the one handling it and not them so who cares why there are somehow not industry standard and it's people like you who are getting professionals into Sony because they have this stupid "it needs a canon/nikon logo" theory!

The problem is everyone I have approached and have the chance to work with have Canon or Nikon and they always say the same thing, if you want to be trained by us then you need to make the change.

I do actually quite like the idea of going for Canon 7D because of the video. Would eventually be doing fashion, bridal, MUA and Weddings.

It is driving me nuts :bang:
 
Cheapest solution is to get a nikon strap :-) If you buy an A580 it has the same sensor as the D7000 anyway. Stick on a nikon badge and no b****r would be able to tell!

Flash is more tricky with a sony but you can get a hotshoe converter to convert to standard hotshoe. Flash triggers and adapters for pocket wizards so it is all possible and for much less than £1500 to change to another brand.

What happens if you spend the money changing and find your pictures are no better or even worse??? You have a shed load of lenses there and a change to canon/nikon would mean doing with one or maybe two instead of the wide choice you have now.
 
Anyone that insists they want you to change to be trained isn't worth bothering with. Find someone that trains you into the art of taking pictures which can be done with any brand of camera!
 
The changing has added benefits of lens swaps etc. Canon EOS 5D Mark II or 7D?!
 
£1200 will be tight for a D700 or 5D MK II. It's a healthy budget for a 7D + a lens or flash though. Depends if you want full frame or not, if you can afford full frame lenses or not etc. I can see why you are being asked to dump Sony though.
