Sending a 2nd hand Sigma lens in for warranty repair

I recently bought a Sigma 50mm 2nd hand and fear it's got AF challenges as quite a few of my pics, particularly when taken at more than 3-4m away, seem to have randomly back or forward focussed. I've checked the focus point in DPP and the focus definitely isn't right in the end picture. However, I have MF calibrated the lens (-7) and it seems to be good for close up pics.

The person I bought the lens from never registered the lens for warranty with Sigma - he also gave me the original purchase receipt. I've since registered the lens and have had the 3 year warranty confirmed by Sigma themselves.

My question is, if I send the lens in, the name & address on the original receipt is clearly different to mine. Will Sigma be bothered about this (I could say a friend purchased it for my birthday if needed) or are they just bothered about having proof of purchase? Never had to send a lens in for repair/calibration before, hence the question.

Canon wouldn't bother but I can't speak for other makes.
 
I'v seen people say they've gotten away with that but in the end is it really going to change what you do? if they won't repair it then they won't repair it, you can but try.
 
OK, another question. Will they need the original receipt or a copy of it? It's a hand written receipt, so if they only need a copy, is there any reason why I couldn't tippex the name & address on a copy, then re-write with my name & address, then photocopy again?
 
The lens was a 'gift' from a friend. There is nothing 'wrong' with that.

I am just slightly concerned as it is random hit and miss. When it misbehaves consistently it is easier to fix. Anyway, as it is under warranty definitely give it a go.

Does it matter that I only registered for warranty a week ago, despite the lens being 18 months old?

I saw that but Sigma have e-mailed me back saying that I'm covered. You have to put the date of purchase in when registering, so surely that would have raised a flag?
 
According to the warrenty leaflet the guarentee is non transferable, but at the same time I know that none of my new or used sigma lenses have ever actually been registered so whose to know.
 
What's to say the person hasn't moved house? They can't say that you're not covered if you move! I simply addressed the return address as the same person but back to my address...
