Hi again.

I have (still) not gotten around to buying myself a new walkaround lens.

Currently using a Canon 40D and looking to upgrade my glass for Christmas with a budget of roughly 400 - 600 (give or take a few quid).

On my list so far is

- a second hand 24-105 L - used Marcel's a few times and I love it.


Or new:-

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD ASP IF

Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 SP AF Di

Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro

Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro

Tokina 16-50mm f2.8 AT-X DX Lens


Has anyone had much experience of any of these lenses and if so, what do they think.

I have a 10-20 for landscape stuff and a 70-200 / 2.8 for longer ranges - so I am looking for one in the range of 17-70, pref 2.8 throughout, unless it's the L glass mentioned above!!

Have I missed any out? Your thoughts please ... Cheers !

I would not discount the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DC Macro. Its obviously not an f2.8 past 17mm, but a very nice walkabout lens.

There is new (non UK warranty) 24-105 for 650 on classified if I remember, if you don't need the f2.8 it's a great lens.

For what you want to use it for go f2.8 through has to be #1 IMO.

I'd also consider going S/H Siggy to Tammy and wait to save more cash for the Canon L series f2.8.

However, have you aquired a 2nd Body yet or are you still looking at begging / borrowing for next season

I love my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 - the quality for the price is outstanding.

That said, my next purchase will be a 24-70 f2.8 L, along with a full frame

I have the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and although I don't use it much it surprises me every time that I do, I used it last night and it did.

I personally think that 24 or 28mm starting point isn't wide enough for a walk about zoom lens on APS-C, fine for FF but not for a small sensor camera for me.

Had the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 and just changed to the Canon 24-105 f4 IS

The Canon is sharper at f4 then Sigma at f4 and the IS and longer reach are also pluses.

Sigma had the advantage of f2.8 which I did not really care about.

LOL - not got that second body yet - hoping me and Marcel can come to some sort of 'arrangement' involving biscuits, L glass and 70-200's
