Hi there,

I have a Canon EOS 500D which i'm having great fun using, I don't change lenses all that often (as I only really have two that I use, the 100 mm usm macro and the nifty fifty), but i have noticed a couple of spots on the sensor visible from about f10.

so, sooner or later i'm going to need a clean.

i've done quite a bit of research on this and the 'wet' eclipse + swab method seems to be one of the better ways to clean your camera - i was looking at buying this kit: http://www.cameraclean.co.uk/produc...esc=Pro+Cleaning+Kit+with+Type+2+Sensor+Swabs

just wondering, what you guys to to clean your camera?

Simple enough... start with a blower, it often works.
If it doesn't then use a brush.
If that doesn't work, then either a "wet" (slightly damp really) method or a SensorKlear pen (your choice).

Take your time and don't be frightened about it. Dust is just a fact of life with any DSLR.

Use your favourite search engine to find out more about the 'Arctic Butterfly' - really good, and no moisture!

I have to agree that the first thing to try is the Rocket Air Blower, it worked for me for 3-4 years. :) And it is a cheap solution. ;)

However I was forced to get a wet clean solution when I found dried liquid spots, which looked like little doughnuts on my images. :( I went for Sensor Swabs and Eclipse liquid because I didn't think anything else would have solved that problem.

After a few attempts which made things a lot worse, by not keeping clear of the edges of the sensor edges, but I eventually realised what I was doing wrong, and it worked perfectly. :)

I would go for a wet clean after the Rocket Blower fails to work because you may eventually get dried liquid or sticky pollen on the sensor and anything else may either not remove the spots, or would just move any spots around into a smudge imho.

Tip

Always have the camera facing downwards if cleaning a sensor with a blower or anything similar. Trouble with using a blower is there is no guarrantee that the dust isn't going to be blown into another part of the camera. For light dust removal the Artic Butterfly is good together with a sensor loop to examine the sensor for me usually does the trick.

Lenspen SensorKlean if the blower doesn't work.

Jessops selling Pro kit currently half price (which includes a blower if you don't have one) - they sell just the lenspen for £15, so the kit is a bargin at the moment, esp with the 3 extra tips.

Not sure how long their sale is on for though

Reccomended piece of kit for that price then?

Cheaper on ebay although i just bought it from Jessops. lol.

cuthbert,

There's no point spending £70+. Just go to Warehouse Express Pec Pads 10x10cm (100 Sheets) + Eclipse Lens and Ccd Cleaning Fluid (59ml) Together £18.98. These will last a very long time. I got a set of small plastic spatula's from Willkinson's Hardware for about 60 pence = Job done

Regards Toonie
