I have been thinking about getting my sensor cleaned for some time and i am just wondering what options i have. I have the 400d which supposedly has sensor cleaning built in but there is one or two dust spots on the sensor.

What can i do? How much does it cost?
 
Just my view but personally i would suggest doing some reading up on it and doing it yourself rather than pay some one else to do it.
I had a lot of dust on my 30D at one point so after a few nights reading and not getting anywhere with a Rocket blower or Arctic Butterfly I got a small starter kit from Warehouseexpress that consisted of some Digi pads and a small bottle of Elipse fluid.

Its really easy to do, and you aren't actually cleaning the sensor, just the AA filter (unless you have one of those special editions that dont have the filter in it) so if things do go wrong its not going to cost a fortune to get fixed.

I guess paying to get it done is the easy and safe option but if you find you need it doing often then it pays to learn how to do it yourself.

I'd pretty much agree with Dave.

Canon "cleaned" my sensor once and it came back with just as many dust bunnies as it went away with and as the saying goes... if you want something doing right do it yourself... so ever since that waste of time I've done it myself.

I use a rocket blower first and if that isn't good enough I use a Pec pad formed around a slice cut from an old credit card, add a drop of eclipse fluid and that does the job, better than Canon did :)
 
I cleaned my camera's sensor for the first time a few weeks ago. It took all of 2 minutes and wasn't very difficult at all. I used Pec Pads and Eclipse fluid, and made my own sensor "wand". I believe it's referred to as the "copperhill method."
 
Well i am a bit scared to do it myself, so i decided to phone Jessops to see how much they would charge. The guy said that they send them away to get done and that it would cost £25 to send it away and they would then quote for the job. He told me that a 400d had been sent away a few weeks ago and they charged £65 for it.

£65 seems a bit on the high side to me so i think im going to buy something from warehouse express and go with a do it yourself option and save myself a nice sum!

Good idea. I guess as a one off its not too bad if your really nervous but if you have to get it done a few times over the a year or so it can easily mount up.

Also it means you wont be without a camera for a week or so.
 
My cleaning items came today in the mail! I decided that i would give it a worl. The kit cost £16.99 from Warehouse express. On the advert online it said that it comes with 3 wet and dry swabs, but in actual fact it came with 4!

So this was my sensor! I seriously didnt know it was this bad!!!!

So what are the results like? I must have had a lot of build up as there are some stubbon dust marks on there which no matter what i try just will not go but its a 100% better than what i started with.
