Have heard a few things about the sensors in different camera being different crops.

What does this really mean, i know that the 5D is full frame so it gives a wider view then the 7D. But does this mean you can use certain lenses on certain ones at all.?

I ask as i will be upgrading to a 7D soon and looking for a lens to go with it, is there any types i should avoid..?

Thanks,

Tyler

EF-S mounts are for crop sensor cameras, and will only work on said cameras i.e 1000d, 550d, 60d and 7d

EF mounts are designed primarily for full frame cameras 1ds, 1d, 5d, 7d, but will work on crop sensors too.

So to summerhouse, if you have a crop you can use most canon lenses or third party canon fits, if you have a full frame you'll need EF mount lenses by canon or third party equivalents. Sigma and Tamron both have letter designations to there names for their respective mounts but cant remember at the moment.

Disclaimer: Everything i just said can and probably will be completely wrong, but typing keeps my fingers warm.

The 7D is the same crop factor (1.6X) as your 450D so all lenses both EF & EFS will fit and work with it.

The 5D being full frame will not work with all lenses as some such as the EFS fit ones, Tamron Di, Sigma DC lenses are designed solely to work with crop camera's, as such usually the rear of the lens protrudes to far into the body and could foul the 5D's mirror and they're narrower field of view will not project an image that will cover all of the FF sensor, so you will get bad vignetting.

Tamron DI lens is the correct lens for 5D full frame. It is the DI 2 lens that is not suitable. Its OK to use, no damage, but bad vignetting.
