Yes
right guys the sensor on my 40d is fubard :(
i take a picture of say the wall and only get the bottom portion.
so is it worth getting the sensor replaced or is it gonna be a better idea to go 50d?
all help appreciated

just to confirm this is with no flash? as it kinda sounds like a flash sync thing

else the camera is probably for the bin :(

does this happen at all shutter speeds? it may be that your shutter assembly needs replacing.

Have you tried all the standard stuff, reset functions, replace battery's etc?

What happens when you take a picture without a lens on?

and shutters are replaceable

do some googling canon replaced my 1d shutter way outta warranty because they said it was their bad

Sounds like an old 300d issue where the AF mirror stops working properly and does not swing out of the way along with the main mirror. There is a small "pin" that operates a linkage between the main mirror and the sub mirror. In the 300d it was plastic and broke. to repair you open the camera and get into the mirror box and insert a new pin (bit of paperclip) to operate the linkage again. Id say the 40d should already have a metal pin already though.

Easy way to test is to gently raise the main mirror with your finger and see if the smaller mirror underneath lifts up too. If it doesnt it is obscuring the sensor when the shutter opens hence the image you get at the bottom (sub-mirror is slightly less than the heigh of the sensor). You can manually fold the sub mirror up to check, but you lose you Af. (the sub mirror reflects light down on the AF sensors in the bottom of the mirror box). Flip the sub mirror down again to restore AF. You can shoot with Manual focus with the sub mirror folded up.

To check the shutter, set the camera in manual and say a 10sec shutter. Remove the lens and hit the shutter button, you should see the mirrors flip up and the shutter open, if the shutter fully open to reveal the entire sensor then its time to consider the sensor being at fault.

If your considering selling as faulty id be very intersted for some experimenting

Send it to a service centre for an estimate, as has been said it is probably a mirror/shutter fault not a sensor issue. The repair cost will almost certainly be less than the price of a 50D.

I think he means "Their bad", as in "Their mistake/fault/problem to sort out"

You're showing your age a bit there Dave!!

To the OP, could you post an example of the image you're getting?

Tell me about it! No grammar or punctuation led me to believe it was an unfinished sentence! :cuckoo:

Think the sub mirror repair on the 300d was about £120 a few years back. Thought it was a bit cheeky to charge for something that was a design flaw!

Shouldnt be too expensive to repair provided its not the sensor :D

It's definatley a sensor problem just been into jessops and when you lift the mirror the sensor has warped and it looks like there's a bit missing. I'm at work at the mo but I'll post some pics up later

Good excuse for a new camera

Bung it on Ebay as spares or repair and enjoy the new gear

Not sure how its happend really, its always in a bag with either a lenses or the body cap on, the only thing I can think of is I let a friend use it for a week

Can you post a pic of it taken with a phone or something?

Sounds like the shutter from that discription, the Sensor is flat shiny thing with 2 layers of glass over it, hard mounted to a metal frame, Its very very unlikely that it has warped.

If you lift the mirrors, you see the shutter, if you switch the camera on and set it to a long shutter speed 10-30secs or put it into manual cleaning mode you will see the shutter retract and the sensor becomes visible.

That sounds like a broken shutter. Sensor (well in fact the sensor filter) is the green glossy thing underneath it.

New shutter could be very roughly £200. Send it in to Canon elsetree and maybe put a complaint as 'not fit for purpose'
