Right i understand the differance between full format and the cropped sensor like i have in my D90 camera, but what i want to know is this.

if i have a full format lens like my nikkor 50mm 1.8d (none DX) then this is in effect a 75mm focal length that im seeing, but what about all the DX range of lenses that are available? does this mean for example my nikkor 35mm 1.8g DX is actually 35mm the same as an FX lens with a 35mm focal length?

I suppose what im asking here is do i still have to multiply a DX lens by 1.5 to get what id be seeing on a FX camera?

Thanks

All your lenses have to be multiplied by 1.5 to get what you see on a DX camera. Sorry if I'm not explaning that well - your question above is confusing in the way it's phrased.

I know i was confusing myself typing it! lol

Its fine i just needed to be sure all dx lenses still had to be multiplied by 1.5

Lens sizes are always quoted in 35mm format equivalent, so your 35mm Dx lens is 35xmultiplier. I asume this is done for consistency.

Yes.....and no :D

What you get with a 1.5 crop is the effective field of view of lens with 1.5 times the focal length, it doesn't as some people believe, magically transform a 50mm lens into a 75mm one.

Here's a picture to illustrate what I'm on about

as you can see from the above pic, there is no magnification of the image with a cropped sensor, you just lose a chunk of what you would get with a full frame one.

The crop factor is only relevant when comparing the smaller format against full frame.

It is really intended to give those people with old film camera lenses a handy calculator to see what effect those lenses will have when changing to crop format digital.
