SEO and link to other websites. Link both ways?

No
Just checking out the sites that seem to be at the top of the google rankings.

They all seem to have links to local companies - however, the links seem to be one way (i.e. no corresponding links on the other sites).

So, are one way links any good? I always thought it had to be reciprocal.

One-way is of limited value, reverse links are much better.

If it does it's very little - reverse links, age of site, significance and relevance of content are all major factors.

Best ways to hit a high search ranking:

1. Valid links - one way - reciprecal links can have the opposite effect with google. Have a look at www.seo-browser.com
2. Content and regualr updates. Content that is readable and not keyword stuffing!
3. Good use of keywords.
4. Visits to your site will increase your rankings. I host my images for my clients through Zenfolio but always make my customers access it through my website. During the summer my site was at number one on page one on google for my local area which had a lot to do with it's popularity.
5. Don't use SEO companies. Yes they can get you to number one like they can all other clients but they can't keep you at number one - only google can do that and whatever they say only google knows googles algorythms!
6. Add your url to www.dmoz.org - it take ages but is worth doing.

i was told by a google associate or soemthing to do with them that 2 way links are not useless but a one way link is 10 times better get as many 1 way links as possible and she is a good friend of my dads so i know it aint a load of BS

When people talk about "one-way links", they often mean a link FROM your website TO another website (often in a "Links" page). This kind of one-way link is detrimental to your search engine ranking - in effect, you are boosting the ranking of the site you link to.

One-way links coming IN to your website FROM another website are the best for improving your search engine ranking, especially from sites like Facebook and Twitter which have a high ranking themselves.

Reciprocal links (you link to them, they link to you) generally have zero effect, because you are boosting their ranking and they are boosting yours. However, if you had a link to, say the BBC website, and they had a link back to yours, then you would benefit, because the BBC website is likely to be more highly ranked than your website.

In short - go for one-way links FROM other websites TO your website, if you can. Otherwise, go for reciprocal links, especially to and from highly-ranked websites. :)

[Martin is also right in saying that good content, which includes your keywords and is easy to read, and high numbers of visits to your website will also improve your search engine ranking.]

Thanks Julia. By 'high number of visits' I take it you mean visits via a google search? Otherwise, how does google know what traffic you sigh is receiving?

doesn't need to be via google search.
If you have validated your site with google and have analytics code on your page google will pick that up.
Incidently, 3000 visits all from the same house doesn't really count :)

Thanks Martin - I suspected it would be via the javascript (analytics) code.

I have not hit my site 3000 times from home - 1500 hits were from work ;)
