I am finding myself at a bit of a loss with this. I am trying to sort out my website and will be soon giving it a large overhall. However i really need some help on SEO as at the present i am finding it difficult to get working.

Does anyone know of any really good guides on the subject. I have googled it but the guides are a bit wasted on me.

What are the main things I should be concentrating on to get myself further up the google ladder, as it were?

I am currently using photium and will be setting up a wordpress site too. Wordpress has a SEO plugin, do these work well?

Cheers for any info.

It's not easy, I've been at it for over a year and still have difficulty getting my head around it, however we do have over 200 products on our site and each one has to be optimised. Plus of course Google is continually changing the rules. The main thing to remember is to choose a set of key words and phrases and consistently use those throughout your site.

You will always have to keep working on SEO its not just getting it sorted and leaving it...its a continuous tweak.

Heres some pointers:

1. your description is more important than your keywords....word it carefully.

2. Google rewards you for exact phrase matching....because of relevance to the searcher. So if someone types "Fashion Photographer Bristol" and its in your description you are likey to improve ranking.

3. make sure your title in SEO is different to your web address or name....again word it for relevance to your search market.

4. fill in every SEO section for each page...making it relevant"home page" "pricing" etc and avoiding repeat text as google spiders view it as spam.

4. Google loves text.....add as much info as possible to pictures that you have on your site.

5. Get a blog and update the info frequently google love fresh content.

6. Links.....Get traffic coming to your site from as many places as you can....Here,Facebook,twitter,link exchange with other businesses, forums etc.

7. Get an pay as you click google ad. Avoid masses of keywords in one add group.Rather create an ad group for each phrase.Target your region instead of nationally, schedule display time and show ad in google ,not on the complete network.

try that for starters:)

Thanks Alex, I will work on the pointers you've listed above. I am going to completely overhaul my web presence so this will be a massive help.

As already mentioned the Google SEOO guide is great, the Photoshelter guide is good too.

Have a look at Website Grader which scores the marketing effectiveness of your web site. When I was using a Flash based site my scoring came in around 45 but within 3-4 months of following the advice and tips (such as including a blog) it is now around 95 and more importantly I am on the first page of Google for search terms in my area.

Just out of interest I ran your website through Website Grader and it gave a score of 40 so it might be worth looking at.

Here's the Shortest Tutorial Ever on SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

1) Find keywords. Pick a list of words relevant to your business. Think about which words are most likely to get people to do what you want them to do (convert into leads) and focus on those words. Then pick one word (or phrase) to use on one page of your site. For more detailed info, read: Detailed Internet Marketing Keyword Tips.

2) Put keywords in Page Title. The Page Title is one of the most important things that Google and other search engines evaluate to determine what is on a web page. Put your keyword or phrase in the title, keep it short. For more detailed info, read: Why a Web Page By Any Other Title Would Not Rank As Well.

3) Put keywords in Page URL. Google and other search engines also use the text of the URL of the page to determine the content of the web page. You should use your keyword or phrase in the URL of the web page - either the folder/directory structure or the HTML file / page name itself.

4) Put keywords in Meta Data. While the page metadata (Page Description and Keywords) are not nearly as important as they used to be, they still count. Take advantage of them by putting your keyword or phrase there. The description should be readable by a person and make sense and the keyword metadata should focus on your keyword or phrase - do not make it long, less is more. For more detailed info, read: Understanding the Magic of Meta-Data.

5) Put keywords in your H1 text. The H1 text is usually the title of an article or some larger bold text at the top of your page. Google and the smaller search engines can see this and they put extra importance on the words in the H1 text. Make sure your keyword or phrase is there.

6) Use keywords in the page content. Putting the keyword in your page content also signals to search engines that the page is actually about the keyword and should show up in search results. IWe have heard from "experts" that you should use your keyword anywhere from 4-6 times to 10-12 times. Our advice is to just write naturally.

7) Monitor your rank. Give the search engines some time to do their thing (couple days) and then keep checking your rank to see what happened and track your progress."
