I like the results from a technical standpoint...I'm just not intrigued by the picture. I certainly don't mean to be harsh, because this will be right up someone else's alley.

lacks a little dof for me, I would have liked to have seen the whole image tack sharp

Hunter, that's not harsh at all, thanks for your comment. The aperture was f11.
The hdr image was a combination of 3 raw files exposed in camera using exosure bracketing, -1 stop normal and +1 stop

the sepia version looks much better than the colour one, I must admit.

Yep...the sepia definitely shows much greater dynamic range without being heavy=handed. Nice.
