i seem to do the same settings in pp to pump pic, ie:up saturation, contrast and usm, what settings could you recommend straight from camera, do you keep in standard, vivid, or neutral for taking pics, is ther a WB setting for general use, saturation sharpness etc, thanks

If you shoot RAW, then a lot of settings are not set. You still try to get the image as close to how you like it in camera.

If you're always doing the same editing for sharpness, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue, then for Jpeg it makes sense to get them as close to what you want for most of your images imho.

Try the different Picture Control options, and use whichever is closest to what you want. You can also customise whichever Picture Control you chose is you're still doing the same adjustments to your images.

WB is separate from Picture Controls. WB is adjusting for the different light falling on the subject to adjust the colours for any colour cat from the light source. While Auto White Balance works well most of the time, it can become inconstant when overly large coloured objects are in the scene in one pic, but not another, so if under one type of light, use the appropriate WB.

thanks, shoot jpeg, there is settings in my camera for sat, sharp, hue, just wondered if togs use any of these settings as default, when i put pics on pc dont want to go to pp if it can be achieved in camera

I actually prefer the "portrait" picture control to the "standard" picture control for some reason. The only customisation I make to the control is to set sharpness to "0" instead of the default setting (3 I think). I find that 5000k is a good WB for most outdoor shots.

I only ever shoot in RAW as I regard the file as "digital negative". I can't see any reason to shoot jpeg on a camera that has the ability to shoot raw as the jpeg effectively discards about 90% of the image data.

thanks, i'll give the different settings a try,
to me the raw route seems a time machine, maybe worth the exploring,

Unless you process your RAW files with the Nikon software, the Picture Control settings used are ignored by 3rd party software, but I'm sure you knew that. ;)

Also with RAW and the manufacturers own software, I'm 90% certain you can change to a different Picture Control during processing. You can certainly do that with Canon's Digital Picture Professional Software. My copy of Nikon Capture is on a different computer so I can't check that out.

I find typically most Nikon jpgs need a little extra sharpening so I have set up (but rarealy use as I shoot in raw) custom controls with 'sharp neutral' and 'sharp vivid' and use those depending on what I want.

White balance I tend to leave on auto unless I want any particular set to have the same WB all the way through. WB is one of the settings that shows up in the raw file so the computer will use what you shoot with although in raw it is infinitely variable so it doesn't matter if you don't get it right. You can, of course, change the WB in jpgs and often it works well but sometimes you have lost so much data in the jpg compression it doesn't work quite so well.

With both View NX2 & Capture NX2 you can definitely change the picture control during processing. I recently used this feature to change the picture control on my archived NEFs from my old D70s that were taken about 6 years ago.
