Setting exposure with a super zoom

I got a Canon 10-22 lens for Christmas and have started getting to grips with it. Getting the hang of framing decent shots might take me some time but the thing that's really foxing me is how to set a decent exposure when there's a reasonable amount of sky in shot. I always shoot in RAW so I've got a fair amount of latitude but exposing for the sky or for the mid tones either results in very dark landscape or pretty well blown highlights. The dark shots are reclaimable but I'd rather have something better to start with. I was ready for the composition and focussing challenges but the exposure thing never occurred to me. Any advice will be very welcome.

I'd say either a grad filter for the sky, or bracket your exposure and use HDR with photomatix or PS are your best bet if you can't get the whole scene exposed in one shoot correctly?
 
Thanks, I guess that's how it's done. Screw-in filters seem a bit thin on the ground and thick round the rim so I'd better start thinking about Cokin filters.
 
If you're using a Cokin holder, you may need to cut it back for using on your UWA, or else you may find that it causes vignetting. Lee sell a wide angle adaptor which is basically a lower profile holder. (Cokin holders are cheap enough to have one dedicated to wide angle use and stacking filters [especially square ones] can introduce flare.)
