Setting the back focus on the 7D

Am at the hawk conservancy in Andover and its eek suggested I try using the af-on button for focusing, anyone hav a quick guide to activating it or setting it up?

It should already be set up its the AF On the the right of the back, button nearest the eyepiece

Doesn't seem to do anything or am I missing something. Its not something I've played with before.

you do have to its custom functions 4, second option down AF ON press set, then first option press set it will then AF on the AF ON button

Remember to take AF off the shutter button otherwise it completely defeats the object.
