Setting up a Blackberry - do I need Exchange?

Hello peeps,

Any Blackberry experts here?

I have just got a Blackberry for the wife. We currently have our e-mail on my domain which is hosted with powweb. Powweb offer an exchange mailbox that you have to pay extra for. Do I need to set that up in order to get e-mail on the Blackberry? or can it be set up to access the POP3 e-mail?

you need to sign up for bis (blackberry internet service) with the service provider and then you can use pop/imap email, in order to set up exchange with the bb you need to pay alot to bb for an enterprise account

last time we looked at it at work we needed a blackberry server for approx £10k to get it integrated with exchange.

I've got a wanadoo e-mail account and i set up my BB on it using POP3.... works a treat.

You need to have a Blackberry account with your mobile provider. You can't operate it on a bog standard mobile contract.

They will then provide you with bumpf which will include a web address at which you sign up and then control the email aspects of the account.

When I had a blackberry, before my iphone, I had four email accounts routed to it with no problem. Once set up, you probably won't need to return to the web site.

If you're happy not to have push email then you do NOT need exchange, you can set your blackberry up like any other smart/PDA phone. It's only if you want the push functionality (which is the blackberry's strength really) that you'll need it.

not true. Single-user Prosumer Blackberry accounts, that don't go anywhere near Exchange, enjoy the benefits of push email. That's what they're all about!

if you want native direct push support for exchange then windows mobile or the iphone is the one for you.

I have my Blackberry set to pick up POP3 email, it so happens that its my Exchange server but it could be any hosted option. its then set to poll for new emails every 15 minutes. Simples

certainly with o2 you get a blackberry enabled email account which is a proper push email account - you can simply forward your pop3 mail to this.

my blackberry just gets my email from my BT email account, I don't have the BES thing as we are a small company with one blackberry. It is on an orange account.

It works fine for that, crap at anything else to do with the internet. (Blackberry pearl)

Blackberry Internet service - for home users/individuals who don't need integration with their corporate email on a large scale.

Blackberry enterprise server - this integrates with your corporate email system - either domino or exchange. This is not cheap to run on a large scale. Software alone will cost arounD £2500 and then you have to buy client access licences for each user.

The BIS will forward emails to your blackberry as it arrives. it can either be forwarded to the bis or pulled from within the bis software.
