Setting up monitors

How do you know if your monitor is set correctly? I have a laptop with another monitor attached and both look completely different. One has far more contrast and saturation. Is there any way to tell what your picture actually looks like? I submit some of my shots on deviantart and when I check them from another computer they look different again! Its a nightmare because sometimes it is hard to tell if your pictures are over-cooked. What do you guys recommend, if anything?

I know there are tutorials on google but I am interested to know what you guys find works best. It would be great if I could set both monitors perfectly so they were matching.

I use a hardware calibration device as per that link ;)

Anything else is going to be subjective. Also you have to bear in mind that not all monitors are capable of displaying the same amount of colours. For instance, the same image will look different on my laptop and external monitor (both calibrated) becasue the laptop screen is not capable of displaying as many colours.
