As title really is there a way of pre setting white balance when using welding glass ?
Many thanks

The way I do it (no idea if its right but it works) is :

Compose photo/focus, then set the lens to manual focus.
Blu tack my welding glass on.
Fire off a shot at the highest iso and lowest F stop
set that as my custom white balance in camera
Fire off another shot at the same settings to see if it works
Then go down to iso 100 and f11~16 for some long exposure goodness.

Depends if your camera body can:
  1. See through the welding glass to take a white balance (usually needs a fast lens)
  2. Cope with the range of white balance shift the filter causes

Personally, I always do it in post. Shoot raw and then apply a welding glass white balance preset I've developed to suit my piece of welding glass and the way I use it. Your filter may vary from mine, so it's not certain that a generic value will work.

To build the preset I shot a few known white subjects (I always prefer white to grey, to easy for grey to take a tint or hue) and use the eyedropper tool in Lightroom to sample them for the white balance.

Presetting might save you some time in post, but if you're processing your images anyway it won't save you more than the fraction of a second it takes to apply a simple preset.

Thanks daza and Alastair i will give both methods a try,If i can work it out i,d like to attempt a preset, sounds good.

Do a normal custom WB with the filter on, off a white card as described in the handbook, and keep that frame on your memory card so you can go back and reference it at any time. Or store it in one of the custom settings if your camera has it.

Providing you always use the filter in similar conditions, eg daylight, then it will always be pretty close. Or correct in post processing.

I use the WB eyedropper tool in Camera RAW to adjust the WB then give it minor tweaks until it looks right.
