Hi people,

Sorry to post my first thread as a question, but i've just borrowed my Dad's Sony DSLR-A700 ready for the F1 at Silverstone tomorrow.

I'm a complete novice in all honesty, but i just wanted to know if there is a basic set-up i should use in order to get some decent shots of the cars at speed or at least in motion? I want to get the backround blurred, and the car to be in focus but still with a sense of motion to it (i.e wheels turning etc)...

Sorry if this is really simple, but there are sooo many settings i don't know where to start!

Thanks :-)

Shutter priority mode, try 1/320s, continuous focus mode, user select focus point, pick up car early with a half pressed shutter, squeeze off a shot when ready but follow through the panning motion.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, but do you mind just explaining it a bit more in detail? Sorry to be a pain! I've just been messing around, even just knowing what to turn the dial to is confusing enough lol. Should it be on Sport mode? How do i make it shutter priority mode, and what's 1/320s?

Sports mode is great for football as it tends to freeze the action. Shutter Priority is probably S mode

1/320 is one threehundred and twentieth of a second, ie the amount of time the shutter is open.

Maybe a quick read of the manual would help.

Sorry, yeah i just wish i had time to go through it! I've had a quick scan through the manual online, and now got it set to 1/320 and continuous focus mode, just not sure about User select focus point? The only options for AF area are Local, Spot or Wide?

i would expect there is an option to either let the camera decide which focus point to use, or one where you select which point to use, which puts you in control, not the camera which doesn't know much about motorsport and may choose to focus upon a grandstand or the kerb or grass.
