Settings for skateboarding

I was trying to take photos this afternoon of my nephew skateboarding for my OCA course.

The first part of exercise was to focus on him but keep changing the shutter speed from fastest down to slowest . The second part was to try and use panning and again keep changing shutter speed. I wasn't very happy with the results . I set the camera to manual and one shot and kept changing the aperture when I was lowering the shutter speed.

Should I have used al servo? Should I have used shutter priority? Should I have not bothered?? :)

Any help will be greatly appreciated

You should have been in shutter priority mode is you wanted to see the effects of faster/slower shutter. Obviously, the slower the shutter the smaller the aperture so if you are trying to isolate the boarder from the background you have to be careful how small the aperture becomes - changing ISO can help here.

Post some shots
