Hi

Never done any night time photography before so thought i might start by taking some of my little girl with her sparklers, and the little box of firreworks i have bought for her.

I will be using my 50D and probably my 28-135 lens

I also have these lens available to me
Tamron 10-24
canon 100mm
canon 100-400

I just need to to know what sorts of settings for the camera and lens I should be looking at.

thanks

Spike

I went on a photography course that went into detail on flash use.

He turned all the lights off, turned a torch on, and started waving it about. Told us to choose a shutter speed of about 1/25th sec and fire away. the light from the torch was in a wavy trail, looking cool, but he was perfectly in focus etc.

I imagine that would work quite well with sparklers outside

ok thanks fr that, so got the shutter speed what about ISO and F no and where you using flash???

Thanks

If you want long trails say for writing for instance, put you camera in bulb mode and those settings below and of course cable release  or even go down to ISO100

depends on the effect that you want? As your on a tripod you have more options.

you could use a 10 second exposure and get the person to write their name, or you use 1/60th and get a slight trail. maybe f8 ?

boost the iso if you want to illuminate the persons face, i wouldn't use flash...

just buy a pack and play, thats how i end up with my shots... it will all depend on ambient light as well.

like he said! :)

I did took a few snaps with my god-children. These were 5 seconds @ f9, iso 100 with a second curtain flash to finish off. Hand-held.

A little bit of ghosting but seemed to work ok.

Andy.

BTW on the 5D2 with a 580exII, which I would assume would be the same as the 50D this is set through 'External Speedlite Control' -> 'Flash function settings' -> 'Shutter sync' on the camera's menu.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Andy.

Thanks andy it does help.

Will have to buy some more sparklers and get my little girl out again

Thanks again
