Here are some images from last June. All were taken with an SX10IS using flash (diffused or reflected). All used the Raynox 150, Raynox 250 or Canon 500D close-up filter (don't know which used which).

3 This one was quite small. By my calculations the insect's body was in the order of 1 to 2 mm long. It was taken using full zoom (= maximum magnification) with the Raynox 250, my strongest close-up filter, and the image was cropped quite a lot too.

Very, very good work indeed (y)

Great shots. Good focus.

Thanks Malcolm, Chris, Jarod and Gareth for the encouraging comments.

The one of the white spider devouring the bee is going to give me nightmares!

It can get a bit freaky and gruesome sometimes. It doesn't affect me much but my wife is repelled by many of my insect/spider etc piccies and finds them difficult to look at - which is a bit of a pity really as she gives me really good CC (she is not a photographer, but she is superb with colours and pretty good on composition etc, and tells me exactly what she sees and thinks about them. I often make changes after talking about images with her.)

Love #5, didnt know there were white spiders. thought they were all black.

These particular ones can change colour to suit their surroundings. Here is one from a couple of years ago.

These two pictures were taken four days apart, but from the shape of the markings I think it is probably the same spider. I don't know if the difference between these images as to the colour of the markings is real or just the result of different post processing.

I read that it takes several days for the colours to change. This article I just found suggests that the reasons for the colour changes are mysterious - apparently not "catch more prey" or "protect from predators".

EDIT: I just found this page, and scrolling down it a bit saw that the the following image, which I captured at around the same time as the two above, may well be the male of the species. I'm surprised at how different the male and female look. (BTW, you may notice that the one below has one of its front legs missing.)
