Shall i sell fuji x100

I have had the fuji now for about 6 wks used it minimally as I have a love hate relationship with it. I love the look of the camera but I am struggling to enjoy it as much as I should do. It was supposed to be the camera I had with me all the time but it's the last one I pick when going out. I'm tempted to sell it and but the Nikon P700 or canon G12 and with change buy a new lens
 
I find it slow the focusing and even the play back I photograph mainly children so need something quick and I'm easily inpatient and for the money I struggle to justify it
 
If you find it slow you could try selecting manual mode and setting the aperture and shutter speed yourself. I'm pretty sure that that will speed things up and if you still find it too slow you could focus manually or zone focus, I believe that the camera has an electronic distance scale?

I used to be able to capture "action" with my LX2 like that so it should be possible with a X100. Give it just a little help and picture taking should be pretty much instantaneous.
 
I always shoot manual mode but still struggling to enjoy it and unless it's a child who will keep still can't manual focus
 
Zone focus?

If you know that the child is going to be something like 15 feet away focus at that distance and at a reasonable aperture setting you'll get the shot. It's how it used to be done.

Good luck, I hope that you can get somewhere with zone focus.

I'm not too sure that a top end compact will be much better, if any better.
 
The new firmware doesn't address the slow AF, as expected really. It needs a Mk2 version to fulfill the camera's true potential. The only reason to have a camera like that is because you love the form (we all do) and it's function lives up to the price - which it doesn't quite.

The operational niggles are one thing, and they seem to be improved with the firmware, but slow AF means that you lose certain shots and there's nothing you can do about it. Things like zone-fosusing workarounds shouldn't be necessary, and don't work at low f/numbers which are pretty fundamental to this camera's appeal.

There are lots of alternatives - high end compacts, and MFT cameras with pancake primes. Though none has the X100's unique set of features, or charm :(

To be honest, if you had said you wanted to buy a camera to take snaps of kids running around, there's no way an X100 was the right choice. Sell it now while resale values are high.

AF is on a par with Panasonic G-series (not tried a GH), and better than the E-P1. It's fine for a CDAF system.

Hi it's not to just to take snaps it's my back up camera for my canon 5d mkii which originally was my 450d but at the minute I would choose my poor battered 450d every time as my back up

Can you name a compact or any small camera that is fast enough to reliably capture subjects like kids at play using auto metering and focus? Lots of alternatives? If you can name any it'll be a very short list.
 
For the kids can't you just use a smaller aperture and up the iso? I understand that the high iso handling on this camera is amazing and reducing the aperture will result in a bigger dof so less misses perhaps?

I'm not sure. There are certainly much faster cameras about than the X100, like some of the MILCs. But the ones that I've tried, I haven't tried chasing kids about with them. So faster, yes, but fast enough for that, I don't know. Even the best of the non-DSLR contrast-detect AF cameras can only match entry-level DSLRs with phase-detect AF for speed.

Which makes me think that maybe the OP's best option right now might be a fast prime on the 450D, like the Sigma 30 1.4 or Canon 28 1.8. Which although not exactly pocketable like the X100, is still quite a small/light combo and would certainly be fast and with great IQ.
 
Thank you everyone for your feedback. I've put it up for sale and leaving it to fate if I get what I want for it then bye bye if not I'm determined to love it and embrace the excellent image quality it produces maybe I'll take up street photography and more candids instead of using it as my back up for work

It's not the shutter speed that's the problem it's the slow AF

I dont think he was making a point about the shutter speed just the depth of field. Have you tried setting the x100 to its hyperfocal distance in manual and shooting with that, tbh its what i missed on the GF1 oh and an ovf :)
