My laptop runs on XP Pro, and we've just bought a new desktop. It's nothing fancy (doesn't have to be) and has Vista Home Premium installed. I got them networked through the wireless router modem, and enabled file sharing, but the Vista machine keeps asking for the user name and password. We didn't create a password when we set this up and I'm baffled, again. This is just a nuisance, really, not a serious issue, but if anyone could offer suggestions? Thanks.
 
Create a password on the user account you are using and then enter those credentials when prompted.
 
This had crossed my mind, but I was reluctant to create any more unnecessary passwords (my life seems to be full of passwords and PINs), and I can't work out why the the desktop is asking for a password, when its already booted up and running? I could understand why the destination device (the laptop) might ask for one, but it doesn't have a password either. I'll try it, though. Thank you.
 
Unfortunately asking for passwords is part of the security protocols built into windows nowadays.

Yes it's a real pain with simple home networks, but I can see why Microsoft may want to do this with possible multiple users within a single household. Sometimes its easier just to copy the information to a USB drive and transfer that way.
 
One way around this is to create identical user accounts on each of your machine with identical passwords. This fools the security system into thinking you are a local user.
 
I had the same popup box asking for username and password, i didnt have a password set only the username, i enter the username and it then lets me see the other PC's and share files.

I used a flash drive to copy the network settings from the laptop to the desktop but I have an idea that XP and Vista aren't on speaking terms with each other!

I understand why Microsoft put these security protocols into their software, but I do wish they'd just leave to to the end user to decide what level they want, instead of imposing it on us.
